My nieces, aged 9 and 12 this year, have become increasingly curious about ‘preppy skincare’ due to the influence of social media and influencers. To be honest, this is a term that I’m not yet familiar with.
In my role as a Medical Aesthetician, where I work with skin daily, I’m focused on educating my nieces about the ingredients in ‘preppy skincare.’ This way, they can make informed choices instead of blindly purchasing products that may not be suitable for their evolving skin types.
One of the brands that have come up a lot during our conversations is DRUNK ELEPHANT. Drunk Elephant is a skincare brand known for its commitment to using clean and effective ingredients in its products. The brand has gained popularity for its emphasis on formulating products without what they consider the “Suspicious 6” ingredients, which are essential oils, drying alcohols, silicones, chemical sunscreens, fragrances/dyes, and SLS.

Drunk Elephant B-Hydra Intensive Hydration Serum
My older niece was quick to inquire about one of Drunk Elephant’s initial products, the B-Hydra Intensive Hydration Serum. We conducted an ingredient search and were delighted to discover that every component is non-comedogenic. This serum not only provides exceptional hydration but also boasts a plethora of antioxidants that work together to safeguard the skin.
This serum is full of top notch ingredients that help hydrate the skin. They include:
Glycerin, Pineapple Fruit Extract, Lentil Fruit Extract, Apply Fruit Extract, Panthenol, Sodium PCA, Sodium Hyaluronate Crosspolymer, Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate, and Sodium Hyaluronate.
There are also many antibacterial and antimicrobial ingredients that help prevent the formation of acne or irritations in the skin. They include:
Berberis Vulgaris Root Extract, Niacinimide, and Chlorphenesin.
However, the price is a little steep. At $66 CAD for 50ml at Sephora, my niece WANTS this serum, but has decided on a more affordable brand first.

Drunk Elephant Sweet Biome Fermeted Sake Spray
This spray contains amino and fatty acids, electrolytes, ceramides, and most importantly, sweet biome that promotes a healthy microbiome that strengthens the skin barrier.
Some formidable ingredients that moisturizes the skin include:
Sodium PCA, Galactomyces Ferment Filtrate, Glycerin, Beet Root Extract, Fructooligosacchardes, and Coconut Fruit Juice.
The only ingredient that has a comedogenic factor of 0-3 (out of 5), for people who may have sensitive skin, is Tocopherol.
Tocopherol, commonly known as Vitamin E, is generally considered non-comedogenic, which means it’s unlikely to clog pores or cause acne for most people.
A comedogenic rating of 3 for tocopherol is relatively high, so for people with sensitive skin, they may have reactions to this ingredient.
So, what’s comedogenic for one person may not be for another. It’s always a good practice to patch-test a product containing tocopherol to see how your skin reacts personally.
